New Directions in Archaeological Research At The Afrasiab Site During The Independence Period

The Afrasiab archaeological site is one of the most important archaeological sources for studying the ancient and medieval history of the city of Samarkand. During the years of independence, research conducted at this site reached a new stage in terms of its content, methodology, and scholarly approach. While in earlier periods Afrasiab was studied mainly within the framework of its general topography, defensive walls, and certain residential quarters, from the 1990s onward excavations began to be carried out on the basis of clearly defined sectors and problem-oriented research directions.
In particular, the lower area of the citadel, the northern and western parts of the shahristan, the defensive walls, areas adjacent to the city gates, the remains of the Jami Mosque, monumental palace complexes, residential quarters, economic structures, and zones that had later turned into burial areas became separate objects of archaeological investigation. The Uzbek–French Joint Archaeological Expedition, along with subsequent local studies, demonstrated that Afrasiab was a multi-layered, multifunctional urban space with a long and complex historical development.
This article analyzes the main directions, scholarly results, and significance of archaeological research conducted at Afrasiab during the years of independence in the study of the historical topography of Samarkand.
